My role and other group roles.

GROUP ROLES

In my group I was the production designer and script writer.
As a production designer I had to create a timetable of frees, look at locations and assess whether they will be suitable for our films, make sure our actors are on time and to make sure that everything is generally in order. I was appointed as script writer later on because at the time a group member was unable to do the script due to problems therefore I stepped in and had to create a script in a very short space of time. Hannah: She was the original script writer and film editor but she was unable to fulfill this role due to problems therefore she only edited the film however she also helped direct the movie. A film editor needs to make sure the shots are smooth and transition well and to also make sure that the movie is visually pleasing, technically pleasing and follows the conventions of a psychological thriller in terms of editing.

Leon:
He was the e
quipment manager. The equipment manager needs to make sure that they can access the equipment and get hold of any props that are needed for filming. Leon is also our main actor and plays Horatio Milton Baxter.

Jemima: She created the storyboard. She had to create the story board and think about what kind of shots we're going to use in order to convey our story. In essence Jemima had the most important job of all because her vision helped us to direct and create the script accordingly. Jemima is also our main actress and plays the part of Mia Charles, Horatio's obsession.

Background Music

We decided to record Leon breathing heavily for the first 10 seconds of the actual film in order to build tension and the anxiety he feels when he's following Mia as Horatio. Also we feel that adding the heavy breathing in the background makes the character seem more creepy and sinister. We decided to use a background score called "Sad Story" from http://www.freeplaymusic.com/ which is a copyright free music website. We chose this because it has soft piano music in the beginning and builds to a climactic end where the pictures of Mia on the wall are shown to the audience.

Wardrobe

Leon- Horatio Milton Baxter
Horatio wears a red tie, black trousers and a white shirt in order to set himself apart from the other students at his school. He wore a red tie which as connotations of blood, death and danger and he wears white with a red tie to show that his innocence is tainted with danger because white has connotations of purity and innocence. Horatio wears glasses in order to show that he's intelligent because glasses are typically associated with intelligence and academic achievements, it is a stereotype. For example in the "Secret Window", the main character Mort wears glasses and we later find out that he's a writer. Mort is also wearing black which reinforces danger and darkness therefore Horatio wore black trousers in order to emphasise dangerand tension. The fact that Horatio wears black trousers instead of jeans reinforces the fact Horatio is different from other pupils because jeans are casual and worn by most young teenagers.

Jemima- Mia Charles For the opening scene, Mia wears black and red clothes in order to follow the conventions of psychological thrillers. Red has connotations of danger and blood and black has connotations of darkness and death. Horatio is also wearing a red tie which shows that the characters share a connection even if it is bleak. Similarly in "The Butterfly Effect" Evan as a child wears a red t-shirt with a black jacket that had red lining in the opening scene which emphasises the later dangers that appear in the films.

Pictures of locations and actors

ACTORS

Leon- Horatio Milton Baxter
Leon plays the role of Horatio Milton Baxter because he is in our group and he has the same frees as us therefore it is easier to film when we need to. Also, he was chosen because he's tall and stands out from the crowd therefore he was the perfect choice. He is not typical of the male leads in psychological thrillers because the male leads are usually adults, white, tall and are found to be disturbed individuals from the beginning. For example in "The Secret Window" the opening scene is of the character talking to himself and telling himself to "go back" whereas with Horatio we find out that he has an obsession with Mia later on when the camera reveals the various pictures he has taken of her which shows that he has followed her various times.

Jemima- Mia Charles
We chose Jemima to play Mia because she's already in our group and she is typical of female leads in psychological thrillers. Women in psychological thrillers are usually white, petite and have long hair. For example in "The Secret Window", the woman who was introduced in the hotel has long blonde hair, white skin and she seems to be petite.

LOCATIONS

We decided to shoot the first scene on Welham Road in order to set the scene of the film and establish the school setting. This scene is where Mia is walking down Welham Road and Horatio is following her without her knowing. We cut out the scene where he falls down and the girls mock him because we felt that it revealed too much about the plot.

This is the computer that Horatio is going to use to type the article about Mia. We chose to use this computer specifically because above the computer is a space where we can put the collage of Mia because the the camera tilts up to reveal Horatio's obsession with Mia.

This is the whole newsroom. In order to give it a more 'news-like' feel. We're going to create our own school newspaper template in order to make it appear that Horatio is actually writing for a newspaper rather than on a plain word document. Also, the fact that Horatio is sitting alone in the newsroom emphasises Horatio's isolation from the rest of his peers which further alienates him from the mainstream school society.

Film Schedule

FILM SCHEDULE:

Monday 1st March 2010

Time: 2.15-2.55
Scene 1: Horatio follows Mia on Welham Road.
Actors on location: Jemima, Leon and two students.

We chose to film on Welham Road in order to establish the main setting of the story which is set in Graveney School.

Friday 5th March 2010

Time: 11.10- 11.55
Scene 2: Take pictures of Mia outside the theatre.
We chose to take pictures of Mia outside the theatre in order to place her in an ordinary setting. The main aim of this was to create something eerie and mysterious out of a natural setting. The abnormal element to this scene is that Mia is being followed by Horatio who is zooming in on Mia' movements and taking pictures of her.

Monday 8th March 2010

Time: 2.15-2.55
Scene 3: Horatio goes to the newsroom and writes an article about Mia.
Actors on location: Leon

Horatio goes to the newsroom. We chose the media suite as the newsroom because it has many posters and articles that are associated with a newsroom setting. Also, the media suite is home to many computers and in an actual newsroom many computers and printers are needed in order to type and print stories.

Changes:
Initially, our filming was only supposed to last for a week and in that week we were supposed to edit as we went along in order to give us much more time to re-film if we needed to however it took us 3 weeks to actually fully complete our film due to various technical problems that will be highlighted in our evaluation.
